Ancient Cave Painting

Man of Bicorp

Estimates of age place the rock painting depicted above at approximately 15,000 years old. Discovered in the early 1900’s in Valencia , Spain in the Cave of the Spider (Cueve de la Arana) situated on the river Cazunta, the painting speaks of man’s long fascination with honey. Before our ancestors could write, they recorded this honey hunting event in bold red paint.

In the pictograph, an androgynous figure trusts his/her life to three thin vines or grass

How many of us have thought how nice it would be to keep bees for a living?

تشرين الأول 6th, 2009 كتبها منتصر الحسناوي نشر في , نحل العسل

How many of us have thought how nice it would be to keep bees for a living? How many have seen the initial one or two hives escalate into ten, then twenty, then more? Me, for one! After a couple of years in the school beekeeping club, my interest lay dormant until almost twenty-five years ago when my eldest lad, then in his school beekeeping club, asked if he could have a beehive in the garden. Instead of saying “no” I said - in the best tradition of positive parenting, “We need to find out more about it.” We went to an open day at Sparsholt Agricultural College, and that was that. I now run something over one hundred colonies and call myself a bee farmer.

John Howat working his bees

In brief, my point is that most bee farmers are simply ordinary beekeepers who got carried away. Certainly, some of the members of the BFA have been in bee farming all their lives. For example, Willy Robson from Northumberland who is a third generation beekeeper keeping around 1,800 colonies and employing a lot of people. Robert Field, our vice-chairman, is second-generation. Many of the members keep several hundred colonies and make it their livelihood. For many however the bees provide just some but not all of the income. For example, I retired early and bought a small set-up to add to the twenty colonies that I’d built up to in fifteen years of my spare time; the profits now augment my company pension. The BFA numbers ex-professional people, ex-county bee keeping lecturers, bee inspectors, as well as those who have done nothing else in their working lives.

Over fifty years ago the BFA was formed by a number of commercial bee keepers who recognised that together they would be better able to resist the pressure of imported honey, and to support the slightly different needs of large-scale bee keepers. The BFA of today affords its members numerous benefits, many unavailable elsewhere, in the fields of communication and social networking with other commercial and semi-commercial bee keepers, financial, training and support.

The annual AGM  followed by a business meeting, is held at Stoneleigh to coincide with the BBKA Spring Convention (purely for logistical purposes). The usual business of any association is conducted, followed by reports on the areas of interest to our members. This also gives everyone the chance to catch up with old friends from across the country.

Bee Pollen: A Powerful Sex Drive Enhancer

تشرين الأول 5th, 2009 كتبها منتصر الحسناوي نشر في , نحل العسل

(NaturalNews) Bee Pollen is not only great for sex drive, it will also make you feel great, have more sustained energy, increase your endurance, relieve stress, enhance your immunity, and reduce allergies… as well as improve your sex life.

Bee pollen is powerful food, after all, pollen’s role in nature is to fertilize. Over 20 scientific studies have found that bee pollen supports men’s sexual health.

A German publication for physicians described bee pollen benefits for men with prostate problems as "Half the Pain, Twice the Pleasure." This is because prostate pain is significantly reduced while sexual pleasure is seriously increased.

Chronic prostate problems result from the accumulation of free radicals of oxygen in the seminal fluid. Free radicals of oxygen cause a "burn" at the cellular level. Bee pollen eases this burning, and helps a man with these problems to enjoy sex without a burning, swollen experience.

Extensive and comprehensive research in China has shown that chronic prostate inflammation and male infert

The Future of Bees and Honey Productionin Arab Countries

  The Future of Bees
and Honey Production
in Arab Countries

by Moustafa A. EL-Shehawy

punaise.gif (183 octets)Introduction

There is no doubt that Apiculture, still primitive in most of the Arabic country, and that great number of the honeybee races in Arab countries tends to violence and paucity of production. In the same time, we find that the Arabic country is rich in agriculture resources, blossoms and plants, that are prevalent in plains, valleys, and mountains. We have Nabk trees in Tohama and Aseer’s valleys, and camphor trees in Kuwait. We have various plants in mountains and pans of Jordan and Lebanon. We have citrus and cotton in Egypt, thyme in Libya and thorny trees in Yemen… etc.

All these plants and others produce different kinds of honey, but it is not used properly. For example, the opulent grasslands in Libya have 50.000 colony of bees, while Egypt alone has 2000000 colony. Hence. we say that in order to raise apiculture in a certain Arab countries, so, prosperity will prevail all over the Arab countries.

punaise.gif (183 octets)Aims of the study

This study aims to present data and statistical information which are the basic of planning and developing the studies and researches to improve the methods of apiculture and the production of honey. Consequently the proper investment in this field will be accomplished.

punaise.gif (183 octets)Pattern of Study

As there is no recent information about bees in the Arab countries since 1988, when the Arab Organization For Agricultural Development ( A O A D ) had made a comprehensive cadastral to bees’ races in the Arab countries, I’ve updated these information either by collecting it during my field visits to some Arab countries or through researches and reference books the ace been offered to each country in this field.

punaise.gif (183 octets)The Apiculture development in the Arab countries

The table number (1) illustrates the development of apiculture in the Arab countries. In 1988, there was 1,951,630 colony, which produced 13224.9 tons of honey, but now there are 4.263.070 colony which produced 27943.9 tons.

punaise.gif (183 octets)The number of colonies

We see that Egypt comes first in colony number, since it has two million colony of bees ( 2000000 ), presenting 48 % of the total number of colony in the Arab countries. Algeria comes in the second rank. It has 700.000 colony, presenting 16%. Then Morocco with 400.000, presenting 9%. Finally Syria with 316.960, presenting 7%. It means that these four countries have 80% of the total number of colony in the Arab countries.

punaise.gif (183 octets)The number of beekeepers

In the Arab countries we have "406170" beekeeper , Egypt alone has nearly half of this number. It has 200.000 beekeepers. Then Algeria with 70.000 presenting 17%, then Sudan with 50.000, presenting 12%, then Morocco with 27.000, presenting 7% of total number of in the Arab countries. And finally Syria with 24.000 have presenting 6%. It means that, these five countries have 92% of the total number of beekeeper in the Arabic country.

punaise.gif (183 octets)Production of Honey

According to the statistics of the ( A O A D ) , the production of honey in the Arabic country in 1988 was 13224.9 tons. And according to the statistics of the researcher, it is now 27943.9 tons with addition that equals 111%. In the Arab countries, Egypt comes first in producing honey, since it produces 16000 tons of honey yearly. That equals 57% of the total production in the Arab countries. Second to Egypt, there is Morocco which produces 4500 tons of honey. Then Yemen with 1706 tons, then Tunisia with 1445 tons.
